Hot New Technologies
Today’s business person is often a frequent traveler. In addition, business now utilize new work models that incorporate using employees part-time, those working from home, those pregnant or injured, or those located distant from the office. Most companies realize that just providing a cell phone and a notepad is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of out of the office workers. For this reason, Platinum ITS has created a “virtual office” solution whereby staff located out of the office have access to virtually all the resources of those in the office. These resources include:
- Access to the internet
- Access to e-mail
- Access to electronic address books
- Access to shared company files
- Access to electronic calendars and meeting information
- Access to faxes both incoming and outgoing
- Receive phone calls generated from dialing their office extension
- Access to voice mail from pc or phone.
These solutions can be implemented at reasonable costs and greatly increase worker productivity, and best of all they can be made available to your staff from most locations world wide. Contact Platinum ITS today to learn how to “virtualize“ your staff and office!
More and more of our clients are concerned about security, both from an IT perspective and a physical location perspective. Businesses lose millions every year due to theft or loss of business productivity. Clients approach Platinum ITS to learn about solutions on how to reduce or eliminate these types of problems.
Partnering with professional investigative agencies and companies that specialize in installing security related technologies, Platinum ITS now offers a way for clients to view and record real-time live video feeds. Today’s PCs and server based DVRs (digital video recorders) now record high quality video feeds over lengthy periods of time. No more old fashioned tapes or archaic systems requiring tons of storage media and space! Today’s technologies offer instant playback from specific locations at specific times through easy to use Microsoft Windows based systems. Platinum ITS adds another layer to the security model, allowing clients to view their offices, cameras and personnel via web based and proprietary software based systems that can securely (via SSL or VPN) be accessed from anywhere in the world. Systems can be installed in covert locations so employees or retail locations can be monitored, helping clients protect and manage their investments and businesses. Contact Platinum ITS today to learn more about this impressive use of technology.
Shhhh! Most IT companies, our competitors, don’t want you to know about this technology. Why? It saves you both time and money. You see, most IT solution providers love to charge you by the hour, with a minimum of 1 hour billable time, even if the visit or call is five minutes. Not Platinum ITS! They also love to charge for driving time. We have some rural clients that are far from any IT offices. One previous solution provider loved to charge two hours driving time to get there and two hours to return home, often for short visits under one hour. Not only is this unbelievable, we find it unethical.
Today’s technology allows for remote assistance, over secure VPN (virtual private networks). Costly to implement? No way! Remote assistance is already built into Microsoft operating systems and VPN based devices are very reasonably priced now. What is remote assistance? This is a technology that allows Platinum ITS to support your pcs and network from our support centers. This means that 99.5% of the time, we don’t need to drive there or schedule appointments to come onsite. You get IMMEDIATE support and are billed less as a result of convenience. This increases client satisfaction and makes our job easier as well. Platinum ITS supports networks and clients all over the world with this technology. Contact Platinum ITS today to see how it can help you!
Need access to your email from anywhere in the world that supports internet access? Well, webmail has come a long way. With the release of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and 2007, now web based mail is practically as full featured as the full version of Microsoft Outlook. Accessable via a web page, or from a PDA / Cell Phone, Microsoft Outlook Web Access offers a full featured web based SECURE email client that allows access all your corporate emails when using Microsoft Exchange server. Contacts, calendar, journal, notes, tasks and all those other features are available as well. In addition, collaborative features such as shared contacts, shared calendars, shared tasks, shared journal and shared emails are available as well. For those on the go or working in remote locations, this is an incredibly powerful tool. Contact Platinum ITS to learn more about how this great technology can benefit you.
If there is a single most important thing you can do to protect your business, it is to have a complete and effective disaster recovery plan. We ask most business owners or CEOs if they have a life insurance policy. They always say "Yes, of course" or "Absolutely". We ask what about an insurance policy on their business or auto. Same answer. They we ask if they have a disaster recovery policy. Nine times out of ten, we get a "No" or a "What is it?" A disaster recovery policy is just as important as a life insurance policy. It is a policy which ensures your business will continue to function or recover in case of a disaster. Lets define a disaster:
It can be any weather related disaster such as extreme cold or snow / ice storm, damaging winds, flood, etc.. It can also be a fire, electrical failure, terrorist action, extensive staff out of work, or any reason that may seriously impair your business ability to function. We saw this during 9/11 and during Katrina. Companies without a disaster recovery plan almost always go out of business. What does a disaster recovery plan contain:
- Written (preferred) or electronic information stating the plan itself.
- Information regarding who will play what role during a disaster.
- Information regarding contact information of all parties that may be involved during a disaster. This includes local emergency responders, backup IT & Telephony vendors, electricians, maintenance staff, family members, etc..
- Specific types of scenarios and how to respond to each accordingly.
- A list of all critical business systems and who is responsible for their maintenance/support.
- Possible alternative work locations.
- Possible alternative critical company data locations. All systems should have backups stored safely off-site.
- What to do if network equipment is damaged or unavailable.
- Alternate ways to restore internet connectivity.
- Ways to route calls that cannot be answered normally.
In completeing a disaster recovery plan, your company will:
- Realize its weaknesses and areas that need pro-active improvement to meet the plan.
- Make owners and staff more aware of what to do in an emergency.
- Increase the redundancy of network devices.
- Define and improve power delivery and stability.
- Better manage system backups and where they are stored.
- Clearly define how to restore systems if they are damaged or lost.
- Define alternative roles and resources if certain staff members become incapacitated or otherwise unavailable.
If your company does not have a DR plan, please call Platinum ITS today. Even a simple plan is better then nothing at all and may save your company if something terrible happens. Dont think that disasters only happen to other companies, it can happen to you.
Wireless technology has come a long way in the past few years, providing solutions to problems that previously were deemed impossible to do or too expensive to execute. Many companies or government agencies have locations with multiple buildings or sites. This is often true in school districts, campus scenarios, or in manufacturing areas. From time to time, there is a need to provide network or internet access to a building far from another building that has the central demarcation point, or to a location far from a road or location where internet is accessible. Platinum ITS has been providing solutions for these challenges for several years now. Why use wireless?
- In metropolitan areas, it may be impossible to run fiber or copper across an area to another building.
- It may be impossible to trench or run cabling underground in wet areas, in impassable terrain or across roads.
- You may have line of site from location to location but the two locations are separated by property not under your ownership.
- You want to avoid costly running of cables over great distances.
- You want to avoid costly equipment on both sides.
What situations exist where you may want to use this technology?
- Connecting a building or buildings within a few miles of each other that have a clear line of site.
- Where you want to pay hundreds of dollars for a solution where other solutions are many thousands of dollars.
- Where 108 megabit transfer rates or less are acceptable.
Wireless is almost never affected by adverse weather and is completely reliable. Call Platinum ITS today to discuss your special connectivity needs!
